Regular visits for children and teenagers can help dentists predict and correct future problems early in childhood. They will also determine if permanent teeth are progressing correctly.

Le Mars Dental Center also provides mouthguards for children, which can prevent injury or trauma during sports or activities. Other types of mouthguard appliances protect the teeth from wear for children – and adults – who grind their teeth while sleeping.

At a children’s visit, your dentist will examine for:

• Cavities and decay
• Grinding and signs of wear
• Gum disease
• Bite and tooth alignment
• Development of permanent teeth

A children’s exam may also include:

• X-rays or imaging
• Fluoride or sealant treatments
• A discussion of early intervening orthodontics
• Lip and tongue-tie evaluation

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends children have their first exam between six months and one year of age.
